VAPING NEWS: Michigan drops plans for permanent ban on flavored vaping, seeks new fix

The department said it pulled back the proposal on Wednesday because it’s working on an alternative legislative solution to address youth vaping, one that so far appears to be significantly scaled back from the department’s full ban.

VAPING NEWS: The FDA Is Determined To Ignore the Decline in Underage Vaping Because It Weakens the Case for New Restrictions

According to the latest results from the National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS), 11 percent of high school students qualified as “current” electronic cigarette users this year, meaning they reported vaping in the previous month. That’s down from nearly 20 percent in 2020 and nearly 28 percent in 2019—a 60 percent drop over two years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which conducts the survey, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates “electronic nicotine delivery systems,” both welcomed this evidence that the “epidemic” of underage vaping is abating.

LATEST FROM REGULATOR WATCH: Indifferent Truth | Youth Vaping Falls, Yet War on Vaping Continues

Here’s the latest from Brent Stafford at Regulator Watch

According to data released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control, teen vaping fell by over 40% in the U.S. during 2021. However, neither the CDC nor FDA chose to frame the results as a success. Instead, the public health regulators doubled down on the moral panic over vaping.

In this episode of RegWatch, Greg Conley, the president of the American Vaping Association, unpacks the youth use data, talks about the impact of FDA’s marketing denial orders, and discusses the legal fight for relief.

VAPING NEWS: Vaping vs. Tobacco Smoking: What The FDA Is Getting Wrong

This segment of What’s Ahead sharply admonishes the Food and Drug Administration’s cruel and wrongheaded crusade against e-cigarettes.

The agency refuses to green-light even a single application, putting the vaping industry in legal limbo. It should follow the science, as other countries are doing.

Real world experience and studies have demonstrated that nicotine vaping is 95% safer than traditional cigarettes. It’s by far the most effective way to stop smoking—better than nicotine patches, gums and other antismoking aids. That’s why British health authorities strongly recommend vaping to reduce cigarette smoking. In fact, the country’s national health service hosts vaping shops in its hospitals. And France doesn’t tax e-cigarettes, in sharp contrast to the levies it imposes on traditional tobacco products.

Contrary to myth, vaping isn’t a gateway to teenage smoking, which has actually been declining.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF FATHER JACK KEARNEY

Father Jack was a friend to me, a friend to Dimitris, a friend and supporter of vaping and tobacco harm reduction, and someone who will be dearly missed.

RIP Father Jack Kearney.

From Father Jack Kearney’s obituary:

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Fr. John Patrick Kearney “Fr. Jack” who returned to the Lord last night, August 22, 2021, after a brave fight with a chronic illness. Many of us just knew him as Fr. Jack, a priest that served a Great and Glorious God. He was a pioneer and legend in the Addiction Studies and Recovery Community. It would be an understatement to say that he helped people. He literally ushered hundreds of lives if not perhaps thousands into the rooms of recovery and into the counseling profession. There are generations of counselors that owe their livelihood to Fr. Jack and what he taught them. There are hundreds and hundreds of people that are breathing sober breaths today because of his patience and guidance. Over his 38 years of recovery and service, he was selfless; giving new definition to the word . He was the founder of Training Institute for Addiction Counselors (TIAC) and the Family Intervention Service Centers (FISC) in which he helped countless families by providing free intervention services. Until the end, he was an extremely active CAADE member and for the past 25 years he served as president, regional chair, and chaired countless committees. He was famous for his legal and ethical classes and seminars. As a student, you walked away from his classes feeling fulfilled and that you had learned something that made you a better person. Humble, never attempting to draw attention to himself, his smile and big personality would fill a room and each person felt blessed to be in his presence. God blessed us with Fr. Jack and his memory will always be treasured. Fr. Jack. you are loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure. Memorial and funeral arrangements are pending. – Training Institute for Addiction Counselors

LATEST FROM REGULATOR WATCH: Fatal Assumption | Spurious Cost-Benefit Analysis Drives Risky Flavour Ban

Here’s the latest from Brent Stafford at Regulator Watch

With Canada’s general election now over and the federal Liberals returned to power, the future for nicotine vaping in Canada appears bleak.
Without political intervention, it’s likely nothing could stop Health Canada from implementing its proposed flavour ban, which is certain to decimate the industry.
Joining us today on RegWatch is Clive Bates, tobacco control policy expert and former Director of Action on Smoking and Health (UK). He issues a blistering critique of Health Canada’s cost-benefit analysis, which the regulator is using to justify its dangerous new policy.

Why does Bates call anti-vaping efforts in Canada “absolutely reprehensible and unethical?”
