This cell has an accurate capacity rating but is a poor performer. Even at just 5A it delivered less than 1/2 the energy of the other 18350 cells I tested due to its incredibly high internal resistance. This means very short run times at anything above a couple of amps.

The two cells I tested delivered 874mAh and 887mAh at 0.2A down to 2.5V.

I am estimating this Imren’s ratings at 3A and 800mAh. Current ratings for high internal resistance cells like these are a combination of the temperature the cell runs at and how badly the voltage sags, i.e., its Wh specs.

The performance of any 18350 really suffers at higher current levels due to their very high  internal resistance, leading to huge voltage sag. I recommend staying under their continuous current rating. This results in much more efficient operation and much longer vaping time.

This is the fifth in a group of seven 18350’s I am testing and I will be posting a shootout between all of them after the individual test reports are posted. The top three performers will then be identified.

Considering how overrated Blackcell’s 3100mAh cells were I am very happy to see them release an accurately rated cell with the true continuous discharge rating (CDR) marked on the wrap.

I do not like seeing a useless “Max” rating on the wrap though, especially when it’s above the CDR number. I hope Blackcell decides to remove it.

So while the Samsung 25R, and certainly any of the newer generation of cells from Sony and Samsung, are a better choice if available this cell is a good option in countries where genuine versions of those other cells are very hard to find, particularly in Asia.

The two cells I tested delivered 2526mAh and 2522mAh at 0.5A down to 2.5V.

I am estimating this Blackcell’s ratings at 21.8A and 2500mAh.

This is a great performing cell, beating any other 2500mAh-2600mAh 18650 available as of June 2018.

At 10A this cell is a better choice than the Samsung 20S and 24S. At about 20A-25A and higher though the 24S will run for a bit longer. The 20S will hit a bit harder than both the 24S and 25S but won’t run as long at lower current levels.

As of December 2017 Samsung gives this cell a TENTATIVE 25A continuous current rating and a 35A temperature limited rating if you don’t let the cell reach 80°C. As with any cell though, at high current levels it isn’t running efficiently and you will get a lot of voltage sag, power loss in the cell, and accelerated damage and aging of the cell.

I don’t know if the 25S cells available for purchase now are preproduction samples or full production cells. This means that this cell could still be tweaked by Samsung. I don’t know whether that will happen, what might change, or when it might happen…if at all. This will be an issue for EVERY new cell we have access to, particularly if it’s only occasionally available in small quantities as that could indicate they are preproduction samples.

The two cells I tested delivered 2521mAh and 2494mAh at 0.5A down to 2.5V.

I am estimating this Samsung’s ratings at 25A and 2500mAh, same as Samsung’s ratings.

NOT LETTING UP.  VTA’S BOARD MEETS WITH WHITE HOUSE AND FDA AGAIN.

On June 13, 2018, the VTA Board of Directors was out in full force for meetings in Washington, DC and Maryland.  Specifically, VTA’s Board held its second meeting with the White House and its second meeting this year with FDA. Both meetings were productive especially because the VTA Board was able to demonstrate the leadership that it has been taking on the core issues confronting our industry and perplexing regulators – particularly in the red-hot area of marketing.

In addition, VTA again made the case for the creation of a new path for vapor products that would not relegate them to the trash heap of history through the antiquated PMTA process.  In addition, the VTA Board again laid out the conundrum that the current set of undefined regulations are creating for the vapor industry.

Specifically, VTA discussed the various innovations in devices and e-liquids that the FDA’s current regulatory scheme is blocking and how the current regulation, which both bars and disincentivizes innovation, is directly undermining FDA’s primary mission of promoting safe products.  We made it clear that, absent a dramatic change by FDA to accept newer, safer and innovative products into the U.S. market, it is merely a matter of time before another bad incident occurs.

The best part: Once again, VTA left both meetings with its homework, and already is working on responding to the Administration’s requests.   Learn more about these meetings and the follow up at Vape & the FDA 3 on June 26.

SO-CAL FLAVOR MEETING

On June 5, 2018, VTA went on the road to Southern California to lay out its plan to save flavors. VTA Board Members Chris Howard (E-Alternative Solutions), Josh Church (Joyetech), and George Cassels-Smith (E-Liquitech), we’re joined by VTA regulatory counsel Eric Heyer, of Thompson Hine LLP, and put together a half a day presentation on the link between marketing and flavor regulations as well as the strategies we are implementing for responding to the flavor Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking.

Mr. Heyer (pictured) laid out the legal and scientific arguments that VTA has been developing as part of the first-ever full scientific review that it is conducting for purposes of responding the ANPRM.  He also engaged in a series of questions from the audience regarding the implications of those arguments, strategies to pursue, and what else we might expect from the scientific review.

In addition, Mr. Howard explained how VTA’s efforts to encourage the adoption of VTA’s Marketing Standards was essential to how FDA will continue to evaluate our industry and, in particular, to what extent FDA will feel compelled to restrict flavors.

The meeting, which was attended by many of the largest e-liquid brands in the United States and industry leaders, was incredibly engaging.

FLAVOR ANPRM DELAYED!

On the same day that the flavor ANPRM was published, March 21, VTA’s counsel submitted a request for an extension of time from FDA to respond to the flavor ANPRM.  VTA member companies and member associations also made similar requests.  Having heard nothing, VTA reminded Commissioner Gottlieb on June 5 via Twitter, that the requests were pending and necessary given that we were reviewing 300+ studies.  Thanks for all the retweets and likes!  A couple days later, June 7, the FDA granted the request and extended the deadline by an additional 30 days – until July 19, 2018.

That will give us even more time to prepare our response and, more importantly, launch our much-anticipated consumer campaign with CASAA.  Stay tuned and get ready for launch!

While not perfoming quite as well as the Vapcell 1100mAh in my testing this is a pretty good 18350. It delivers a bit less total energy, its Wh (watt-hour) spec, and runs a touch hotter than the Vapcell so I have given it a slightly lower current rating than the Vapcell.

Aspire does not list the ratings on the cell’s wrap but does include a paper insert that seems to indicate that they rate it at 10A. The insert also mentions a 15A “Vaping Simulation” rating using 10 second pulses spaced 5 seconds apart.

I really wish Aspire put the current rating on the cell as it is easy to lose the paper insert, leaving us with a cell with no rating. This can be a safety issue as well as a performance one.

The performance of any 18350 really suffers at high current levels like 15A due to their very high  internal resistance, leading to huge voltage sag. I recommend staying under their continuous current rating. This results in much more efficient operation and much longer vaping time.

The two cells I tested delivered 1154mAh and 1166mAh at 0.2A down to 3.2V.

I am estimating this Aspire’s ratings at 9A and 1100mAh. Current ratings for high internal resistance cells like these are a combination of the temperature the cell runs at and how badly the voltage sags, i.e., its Wh specs.
