VAPOR TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATION RESPONDS TO FDA\u2019S ANNOUNCEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

WASHINGTON D.C. \u2013 September 12th, 2018 \u2013 Today, the Vapor Technology Association responded to the Food & Drug Administration\u2019s announcements regarding the e-cigarette industry. \u00a0Unfortunately, FDA and Commissioner Gottlieb took a giant step backwards against the best interest of public health. By threatening an industry \u2013 and technology that millions of adult smokers are successfully using to reduce or quit smoking deadly cigarettes\u2013FDA is venturing into dangerous territory. \u00a0It is upending its own process by threatening to move forward deadlines and banning \u201ccertain flavors\u201d without engaging in its required comprehensive, science-based analysis.<\/p>\n

We are surprised by FDA\u2019s statement in particular because the most recent available data indicates we are not in the midst of an epidemic. \u00a0\u201cIt is arguably irresponsible and clearly unscientific to suggest that there is an \u201cepidemic\u201d based upon \u201cnews coverage\u201d and \u201cincreased concerns among kids, parents and educators\u201d especially when the current available data suggests the contrary \u2013 that youth smoking and vaping rates are and have been declining,\u201d said Tony Abboud, Executive Director of the Vapor Technology Association.<\/p>\n

VTA has met with FDA leadership multiple times to encourage them to increase enforcement and root out industry bad actors. VTA welcomes any action \u2013 especially those we\u2019ve suggested FDA implement \u2013 to step up marketing penalties and restriction of youth access. VTA has adopted industry leading\u00a0Marketing Standards<\/a>\u00a0and established a responsible marketing hotline for its members. Yet, today\u2019s announcement threatens the entire industry, essentially throwing the baby out with the bathwater in response to sensationalized anecdotes and the loudest voices. \u00a0An entire industry that is saving people\u2019s lives should not be jeopardized to kowtow to hysterical public health groups.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is frightening is that today\u2019s statement offers little but lip service to FDA\u2019s so-called plans to support innovation and prioritize smoking cessation,\u201d said Abboud. \u201cVTA is concerned that this Administration may be the victim of overhyped media reports regarding the vapor industry and as a result may be reverting to Obama-era regulation that prevents any new innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDecisions of this magnitude must be made on science, not emotion. That is FDA\u2019s charge. \u00a0Today\u2019s actions have sent Big Tobacco stocks skyrocketing. \u00a0Does FDA really want millions of Americans to return to smoking cigarettes?\u201d added Abboud.<\/p>\n
