A genuine tobacco harm reduction expert pointed out that the only important message is that \u201cowners of pet mice should not allow their mice to use e-cigarettes\u201d. Professor Jacob George, Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine and Therapeutics at University of Dundee Medical School, said: \u201cThe <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><strong>metabolism of mice is very different from humans and any extrapolation to overall, long-term human health is, frankly, guesswork at best<\/strong><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"20md3-0-7\">. If this was indeed true, <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #b4e02f\" data-offset-key=\"20md3-0-8\">given the significant numbers of vapers worldwide, we would have expected to see an explosion in cardiac arrhythmia cases which we are not seeing in clinical practice, at all<\/span><\/strong><span data-offset-key=\"20md3-0-9\">.\u201c <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"20md3-0-9\">Professor Peter Hajek, Director of the Tobacco Dependence Research Unit, Queen Mary University of London, added: <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"20md3-0-10\">\u201c<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"20md3-0-11\">There are <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\" data-offset-key=\"20md3-0-12\">several problems with generalising the findings to humans<\/span><\/strong><span data-offset-key=\"20md3-0-13\">. Vapers are not exposed to any significant levels of acrolein because <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\" data-offset-key=\"20md3-0-14\">overheated e-liquid has an unpleasant taste<\/span><\/strong><span data-offset-key=\"20md3-0-15\"> and so this is avoided. The study used <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"20md3-0-16\">exposure levels of the other chemicals that are tolerated by humans, but the same doses can be distressing to much <span style=\"color: #b4e02f\"><strong>smaller mammals<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"20md3-0-17\"><span style=\"color: #b4e02f\"><strong> with much more sensitive sense of smell and very different tolerance of drug effects<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"20md3-0-18\">It would be odd if animals exposed to aversive stimulation did not show a cardiovascular response!<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff1212\"><strong> The reason for conducting the study in mice is unclear<\/strong><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"20md3-0-21\">.
