A BATTERY MOOCH POST: Cold Weather Battery Tips
It’s getting chilly here in New York City so I thought I’d post a few tips for the coming Winter…
– Never leave your batteries, or a device with batteries in them, outside overnight. The batteries are typically rated down to -20°C/-4°F but they can damaged if they are suddenly used hard.
– If you need to use batteries that have dropped below 0°C/32°F then run at low power levels for a few draws. This will help to warm them up without stressing them too much.
– If you are coming indoors with a cold mod or batteries then put the mod/batteries in a zip lock bag while still outside and press out all the air before coming indoors. This will help prevent condensation on the mod and batteries until they can warm up to room temperature.
– If your mod or batteries do get covered with condensation then I recommend not using them until the condensation evaporates.
– Never charge a battery that is at 0°C/32°F or colder. This can damage the battery and lead to thermal runaway which can cause it to catch fire and burst. Let the battery site for an hour to warm up.
– Batteries perform much worse when cold. This can lead to early low/weak battery alerts with a regulated mod and weak hits with a mech. Keep an extra set of batteries in your pocket (in a battery case) to swap into your mod if you find that your batteries are getting cold in between uses.
– Vaping in very cold weather is okay as long as you keep your mod somewhere that doesn’t allow it to cool to the outside temperature in between uses….an inside pocket, insulated container in your vehicle, etc.
Use your best judgement though. Batteries hate heat and cold. They’re really just happiest when at room temperature.
A BATTERY MOOCH POST: Hohm Tech Hohm Work 2 – 25.3A 2547mAh 18650…accurately rated, great performer
This is an accurately rated cell that performed slightly better than the Sony/Murata VTC5A and about the same as the VTC5D in my testing. The Molicel P26A still performs better than the Hohm Work 2 though. I am rating the Hohm Work 2 at 25.3A.
The four cells I tested delivered 2625mAh to 2667mAh. This is decent consistency for a cell not manufactured by one of the big OEM’s (Samsung, Murata, etc.). I am rating them at 2547mAh.
In my opinion the ratings set by Hohm Tech are confusing. Especially considering that normal cell-to-cell differences are greater than the 0.1A precision Hohm Tech uses for their current ratings and the one mAh precision they use for the capacity ratings. Any cell could easily have a current rating difference greater than 0.1A and a capacity difference greater than two or three dozen mAh from another cell in the same batch.
The tiny print used for some of the ratings on the wrap is hard to read too and is made even more so due to the patterned background they’re printed on. I also don’t like the large “max” current rating on the wrap.
These are minor complaints though and Hohm Tech is already redoing all their wraps to focus on wattage-based ratings and without the “max” rating being so prominent. This is great to see happening.

This is one of the hazards of using “rewrapped” batteries or batteries from other manufacturers so carefully research any battery you are considering using before purchasing.
Misusing or mishandling lithium-ion batteries can pose a SERIOUS RISK of personal injury or property damage. They are not meant to be used outside of a protected battery pack. Never exceed the battery’s continuous current rating and keep the plastic wrap and top insulating ring in perfect condition.
Any rating in my ratings tables can change at any time as different grade cells appear on the market, we get swamped with fakes, or new information becomes available to me. Please, never assume that the ratings in the tables are permanent and will never change! Always download the latest version before considering any cell purchase.

On Monday, November 4, or early in the week, we are anticipating an announcement from the Trump Administration regarding FDA guidance about sales of flavored vapor products. According to recent reports, this guidance is expected to go as far as banning every flavor other than tobacco and menthol. In spite of years of communications from consumers and meetings with industry stakeholders, it is clear that officials remain unknowledgeable about how the vapor industry functions and what customers need.
Two flavors will not sustain independent vapor retailers and
will unnecessarily make vaping less attractive
to people who want to switch away from smoking.
The White House needs to hear from adult vapers and anyone who loves a vaper! A flavor ban won’t protect our children, but it will kill their parents.
