VAPOR TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATION RESPONDS TO FDA’S ANNOUNCEMENT

VAPOR TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATION RESPONDS TO FDA’S ANNOUNCEMENT

WASHINGTON D.C. – September 12th, 2018 – Today, the Vapor Technology Association responded to the Food & Drug Administration’s announcements regarding the e-cigarette industry.  Unfortunately, FDA and Commissioner Gottlieb took a giant step backwards against the best interest of public health. By threatening an industry – and technology that millions of adult smokers are successfully using to reduce or quit smoking deadly cigarettes–FDA is venturing into dangerous territory.  It is upending its own process by threatening to move forward deadlines and banning “certain flavors” without engaging in its required comprehensive, science-based analysis.

We are surprised by FDA’s statement in particular because the most recent available data indicates we are not in the midst of an epidemic.  “It is arguably irresponsible and clearly unscientific to suggest that there is an “epidemic” based upon “news coverage” and “increased concerns among kids, parents and educators” especially when the current available data suggests the contrary – that youth smoking and vaping rates are and have been declining,” said Tony Abboud, Executive Director of the Vapor Technology Association.

VTA has met with FDA leadership multiple times to encourage them to increase enforcement and root out industry bad actors. VTA welcomes any action – especially those we’ve suggested FDA implement – to step up marketing penalties and restriction of youth access. VTA has adopted industry leading Marketing Standards and established a responsible marketing hotline for its members. Yet, today’s announcement threatens the entire industry, essentially throwing the baby out with the bathwater in response to sensationalized anecdotes and the loudest voices.  An entire industry that is saving people’s lives should not be jeopardized to kowtow to hysterical public health groups.

“What is frightening is that today’s statement offers little but lip service to FDA’s so-called plans to support innovation and prioritize smoking cessation,” said Abboud. “VTA is concerned that this Administration may be the victim of overhyped media reports regarding the vapor industry and as a result may be reverting to Obama-era regulation that prevents any new innovation.”

“Decisions of this magnitude must be made on science, not emotion. That is FDA’s charge.  Today’s actions have sent Big Tobacco stocks skyrocketing.  Does FDA really want millions of Americans to return to smoking cigarettes?” added Abboud.

LATEST FROM REGULATOR WATCH – Lost Liberty | FDA Buckles Under Anti-Vaping Pressure

Here’s the latest from Brent Stafford at Regulator Watch:

Youth vaping has reached epidemic proportions. This is now the official position of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration—the most powerful public health agency in the western world.

Buckling under relentless pressure directed by anti-vaping public health groups, FDA announced a new enforcement action targeting the top-five companies in vaping.

In its statement FDA’s language is troubling. Using terms such as “epidemic” and “clear and present danger” is reckless and presents the possibility of drastic action, such as revoking one’s liberty to vape.

In this episode of RegWatch we layout FDA’s assertions behind its enforcement action and talk with Professor Donald J. Boudreaux from the F. A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study at George Mason University about the real threat public health poses to individual liberty.

LATEST FROM REGULATOR WATCH – NAVA Launch | Vaping Alliance Promotes Unified Standards

Here’s the latest from Brent Stafford at Regulator Watch:

It may not come naturally for the United States to look to other countries for leadership in matters of regulation. But a new ad hoc alliance of vaping advocacy groups is determined to change that with the launch of NAVA: The North American Vapor Alliance. A joint-effort between the American E-liquid Manufacturing Standards Association and the Canadian Vaping Association.

With vaping now legal in Canada, the work to build professional-grade manufacturing standards and retail accreditations is underway. And, the idea is to build that regulatory framework in tandem with the United States.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration and Public Health Canada are already talking, so could a cross-border alliance help pave the way for better vaping regulations in the U.S.?

A BATTERY MOOCH POST: iJoy 25A 1400mAh 20350…hugely overrated, paper top ring, must still rate at 7A

Two of these cells are included with the iJoy Avenger Baby mod and one is used inside the iJoy Diamond VPC kit mod.

A total of six cells were tested. Their performance varied wildly with the worst cell delivering about 1/3 the vaping time of the best cell at 10A (about 30W) down to the 3.3V cutoff used in the iJoy Avenger Baby mod.

This inconsistency is huge and is a big concern as it forces me to rate all of them at the performance level of the worst cell. You might get a decent performer or you could get one even worse than the ones I had.

One possible cause for this inconsistent performance could be the badly done internal spot welds in the cells I tested. Some of the welds burnt through the metal, resulting in a very poor connection and some spot welds missed the metal they were supposed to weld down.

I sent iJoy photos of some of these badly done welds and they informed me that they are speaking to the factory to revise/improve the spot welds and overall performance of these cells. I look forward to retesting them when these cells are released.

This iJoy cell uses a thin paper ring as the top insulator. Do not let eliquid, or any liquid, get on the top of the battery as it could weaken the ring and/or cause rusting underneath.

The six cells I tested averaged approximately 1440mAh at 280mA (0.2C) down to 2.5V.

I am ESTIMATING this iJoy’s ratings to be 7A continuous (about 20W) and 1400mAh. You could get lucky and end up with a better performer, up to about a 15A rating, but never assume you have one like that. I recommend staying below 20W per battery until the revised cells are available. This is 20W for the iJoy Diamond VPC mod and 40W for the iJoy Avenger Baby mod.

Two cells were donated for the purposes of testing by Mike Vapes (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt3WcCLs8Zm-zZNcqgixyMw), two were donated by Kimmy Vapes (https://www.youtube.com/user/luck4kim), and two were donated by Bob The Vaping Computer Guy (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCr6745zQfrRa5GBcoT2cd_g). I want to work for the vaping community full time! If you feel what I do is worth a couple dollars a month and you would like early access to battery availability and testing news and a say in what I test then please consider becoming a patron and supporting my testing efforts: https://www.patreon.com/batterymooch

These tests only note the ESTIMATED ratings for these batteries at the time I tested them. Any battery that is not a genuine Samsung, Sony, LG, Panasonic, or Sanyo can change at any time! This is one of the hazards of using “rewrapped” batteries or batteries from other manufacturers so carefully research any battery you are considering using before purchasing.

Misusing or mishandling lithium-ion batteries can pose a SERIOUS RISK of personal injury or property damage. They are not meant to be used outside of a protected battery pack. Never exceed the battery’s continuous current rating and keep the plastic wrap and top insulating ring in perfect condition.

Any rating in my ratings tables can change at any time as different grade cells appear on the market, we get swamped with fakes, or new information becomes available to me. Please, never assume that the ratings in the tables are permanent and will never change! Always download the latest version before considering any cell purchase.
